8:35-10:05am   Lauren Spieller, Triada US
How to Write a Killer Query and Get RequestsWriting a successful query is notoriously hard. From summarizing an entire book in only 250 words, to following the strict submission guidelines that differ from agency to agency, to standing out in a sea of submissions—sometimes it can seem like the odds are stacked against you! But it doesn’t have to be that way. Lauren will provide you with clear, encouraging instructions for writing a stellar query that will stand out in a crowd, and get you the requests you’re dreaming of. Even better, she’s an author herself, so she’s been exactly where you are now! She’ll point out common mistakes writers make, as well as the no-no’s that make agents cringe. Rhetorical questions? Unclear stakes? Bad comp titles? Lauren will cover it all and more, in addition to critiquing participants’ work and providing examples of real queries that worked! *Pitch feedback, Q&A to follow*
10:15-11:45am   Taylor Martindale Kean, Full Circle Literary
Hearing Voice in MG & YA FictionWhen developing a project and embarking on the submission process, authors frequently hear that “voice” is a crucial element of a book, that agents and editors are always looking for something with fresh or unique voice. When industry professionals are making decisions on manuscripts, voice is often a huge part of those decisions. It can be a make-or-break element of a book, regardless of category or genre. But what IS voice? In this session, we will answer that question, define the elements of voice that make books successful and effective, and share tips on how to find and develop voice in your own work. *Pitch feedback, Q&A to follow*
11:55-1:25pm   Natalie Lakosil, Bradford Literary Agency
