Join us November 8 – 10, 2019,
at the Siena Center in Racine, Wisconsin,
for our Fall Retreat.

With the theme Let’s Get Crafty, we’ll focus on craft by offering two separate tracks—Picture Book writing and Middle Grade/Young Adult writing—with 30 spots available for each track.

Our faculty includes author/illustrator Jessixa Bagley, Charlesbridge editor Karen Boss, G. P. Putnam’s Sons editor Stephanie Pitts, and author Jeff Zentner. Each of our faculty will lead a specialized presentation for their designated track, as well as offer continuous feedback throughout the weekend. Faculty will be available to all conference attendees during the retreat, but will focus their presentations and critiques on their designated tracks.

Member registration opens on August 13, 2019, and members will have a full week of access to register before this event is open to the public. Retreat cost includes all meals (Friday dinner; Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and Sunday breakfast and lunch), two nights’ stay in a private room with bath, your PB or MG/YA track programming, and an in-person critique with one of our faculty members. Cost for SCBWI members is $395. Cost for non-members is $425.

Please note: you must have a work-in-progress to submit for critique (due September 24; see sidebar “Critiques” link), and you’ll be working on that WIP throughout the weekend. Our final day together will offer the opportunity to share a bit of your revised work with your track group, as well as your track’s faculty author and editor.

The Facility

The Siena Center has been newly rebuilt and offers modern and clean facilities, with an open kitchen adjacent to the main conference rooms, as well as an on-site bookstore that will be selling books by our faculty.

Please note that all attendees must be housed on-site and participate in the full retreat. We will not be offering day passes.

In addition to our main retreat rooms, we’ll also have access to a variety of on-site rooms to work or meet with others for feedback. We’ll be designating certain quiet spaces, but we encourage you to bring headphones or earplugs to create the ambiance you need for serious work.

We’ll be having conversational socials both Friday and Saturday nights. We won’t be catering food or having a cash bar, but will have some snacks and drinks on hand. We encourage attendees to bring snacks and drinks for themselves or to share. There are multiple kitchen spaces available for storage and prep.

This event is fully booked.
