The Dish on Dialogue with Victoria Selvaggio, Literary Agent/Partner of Storm Literary Agency

As an important element within your story, dialogue shows characters in vulnerable ways; it expands on and reveals your plot, always moving it forward; and it adds the authenticity needed for readers to feel that compelling urge to join the journey. But, to be effective, dialogue doesn’t work alone. Rather, dialogue, teamed with the narrative voice and other story essentials, creates balance, resulting in much more than s/he said.

This presentation, with writing exercises, will cover the essentials for crafting realistic dialogue. Those who RSVP will also have the opportunity to submit two pages of a manuscript that Vicki will use her in presentation. Though Vicki will not do a full critique, she will point out what’s working, offer constructive criticism, and use our submissions as examples.

You will receive the guidelines for submitting two pages of a picture, middle grade, or young adult book when you register by email to Deb Buschman mbuschman@wi.rr.com. (This may seem obvious, but please be sure your submission contains a significant amount of dialogue.) The deadline for registering is April 24, and your two pages must be submitted to Vicki Selvaggio by May 1. We have limited the attendance to the first 30 who RSVP.

Note: You don’t have to submit to attend the presentation.

Before joining Storm Literary Agency, Vicki was with The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency and was first drawn to the publishing arena as an author. She is a former Regional Advisor for SCBWI: Northern Ohio and is a frequent presenter at conferences and library events. Victoria is enthusiastic and passionate about supporting writers and always interested in meeting new writers and illustrators and hearing about their unique projects. As a special consideration to those attending this event, she will also take submissions, even though she is currently closed.
